Generic Rizatriptan is present in this medicine as the chief active component. This medicine helps in narrowing the blood vessels around the nervous system. Maxalt will simply treat and manage a headache that has been stimulated by now.

Prescribed for

Maxalt 10mg can be used both in adults and children 6 to 17 years of age. It is a well-known drug for the acute treatment of migraine attacks with or without aura. It will not decrease the number of migraine attacks or inhibit headaches from arising.

How it works?

Maxalt 10mg or Generic Rizatriptan works on the serotonin receptors and brings vasoconstriction and exerts its beneficial effects in the management of migraine headache. It also prevents the discharge of calcitonin peptide from the trigeminal nerve.


DO NOT use this drug in patients with:

  • Uncontrolled hypertension.
  • Any bowel disease.
  • Hypersensitivity to Maxalt or Rizatriptan.
  • Underlying heart illnesses such as angina, coronary artery disease, myocardial infarction.
  • Taking Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (antidepressant drugs) concomitantly with this drug.
  • History of stroke or heart attack.

Storage conditions

  • Store Maxalt tablets at room temperature at 15-30°C away from moisture and heat.
  • Do not use after the expiry date printed on the blister labels or carton. If your tablets have expired, do not dispose them via wastewater. Always ask your pharmacist how to dispose the tablets which are no longer required.

Dosage and Administration of Maxalt 10mg

The suggested starting dose in adults of Maxalt is either 5 mg or 10 mg for the acute treatment of migraines. The 5 mg dose is safer than 10 mg as 10 mg may have a larger risk of adverse effects, though it may deliver a greater effect. In children, the dosing of this medicine is based on the patient's tolerability and body weight.

Take this drug after a migraine attack or headache has already started or you notice headache signs. Take one whole Maxalt tablet with a full glass of water without breaking or splitting the tablet. After taking this tablet, if your headache does not completely go away, or goes away and comes back, take a second dosage two hours after the first. It is directed not to take more than 30 mg of Rizatriptan in a day. You should contact your physician in case you have more than four headaches in a month.


Overdose of Maxalt tablets may cause shortness of breath, chest pain, uncontrolled high blood pressure, blurred vision, confusion, chest pain and seizures.

Risks and Side Effects of Maxalt 100mg

  • The most common side effects are nausea, tiredness, irritation or inflammation of your throat, face, lips, and tongue, dizziness or drowsiness, dry mouth, difficulty in breathing.
  • The serious adverse effects include bloody stools, abrupt severe headache, surprising and serious stomach pain, chest pain, problems with speech, lack of feeling, or prickly feeling on your fingers or toes, vision problems, or difficulty in balancing, confusion.

Safety Measures

  • Do not take alcohol while taking Maxalt as its effects may worsen.
  • Do not take Maxalt if you have a history of heart disorder or blood circulation problems.
  • In case you have intolerance to sugars, contact your doctor before taking Maxalt tablets.
  • As Maxalt produces drowsiness and dizziness, thus you should avoid driving or performing any kind of physical activity that demand attention.
  • Maxalt should not be taken with other migraine headache medication or ergot containing medicines.
  • If you are hypersensitive to Rizatriptan, do not take Maxalt.
  • Do not take Maxalt if you have previously taken antidepressants like monoamine oxidase inhibitor such as rasagiline, isocarboxazid, selegiline etc. in the past 14 days.
  • Breastfeeding should be avoided for 24 hours after treatment with Maxalt.
