Erythromycin is a bacteriostatic antibiotic, which is also a standard type of macrolide. Erythromycin is a special type of antibiotic which is used against microorganisms like H. influenza, a. racemes, and another type of enteric bacteria and eubacteria. Erythromycin is also used to treat infection which is caused by the susceptible bacteria in following diseases such as: respiratory tract infection (upper and lower), pertussis (whooping cough), diphtheria and ammoebiasis.

Erythromycin A is the major subunit of this component. Erythromycin binds to 50s ribosomes subunit and then inhibits the bacterial cell wall synthesis. Erythromycin also inhibits the protein synthesis and peptide transferase activity.

Contraindications

Erythromycin is contraindicated with certain drugs such as:

  • Terfinadine,
  • Astemazole,
  • Cisapride,
  • Triazolam, midazolam.
  • Benzodiazepines.

Uses of erythromycin

Erythromycin is widely used for its antibiotic and bacteriostatic actions which are following:

  • Infection caused by H. influenza in both upper and lower respiratory tract
  • Wound infection can be treated by drug.
  • In skin disease such as acne vulgarize, pimple, other acne disease.
  • It’s an antibiotic so it can be used in inhibiting the growth of bacteria
  • It can be used in prophylaxis for elective colon operation.
  • It can be used to treat campylobacter enteritis infections.
  • Erythromycin can also be used to treat sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea, syphilis, etc.
  • It is used in the management of genitourinary infection, urinary tract infections.

Eryc should be stored in room temperature.

Doses:

  • Eryc 500 mg should be taken two or three times in a day orally with water ors as directed by the physician.
  • Eryc 250 mg should be given to children two times in a day.

What to do if you forget to forget to take this drug

Use antibiotics on a regular basis to get maximum benefit. But in case if you forget to take it, then consume it as soon as you remember. But if it is already the time for another dose, then do not take it to avoid harmful effects.

What to do if you take overdose of this drug?

Don’t use this drug in excessive amounts in any condition as it can lead to allergic reactions like rashes, irritation, hives etc. In case of emergency call your doctor immediately.

Side Effects

When erythromycin is applied locally, then following adverse reactions can occur:

  • Burning, itching, redness, dry, peeling, oily skins.
  • Eye irritation may also occur.
  • Also effects persist or worsen.
  • And effects other skin infections like fungal and bacteriostatic infections.

Safety Tips

This drug should not be taken in case of:-

  • Theophylline toxicity
  • Elevated digoxin serum level condition, then erythromycin may affect the action of the digoxin.
  • Anticoagulant agents as when erythromycin and anticoagulant drug are taken concomitantly, then erythromycin will affect the pharmacological action of anticoagulant agent.
  • Erythromycin may also affect the metabolism of antihistamines, terfinadine, and astemazole.
  • Rare cases of cardiovascular events, so erythromycin and CVS agent should not be used together.
