Mechanism of action of Doxycycline

Doxycycline is an antibacterial agent which acts by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial protein. Doxycycline is lipophilic in nature and reversibly binds to the subunit of ribosomes, so that the t-RNA does not bind to m-RNA; hence there is no protein synthesis for bacteria. Thus bacterial growth does not take place.

Medicinal use of Doxycycline

  • Doxycycline is used to treat many bacterial infections like as acne, urinary tract infections, eye infections, intestinal infections, gonorrhea, chlamydia, some gum diseases and other infections.
  • Doxycycline is also used in the treatment of blemishes, bumps and acne like lesions, which are caused by rosacea, but will not treat the facial redness caused by rosacea.
  • Some forms of doxycycline are used to treat malaria, anthrax and infections caused by mites, ticks and lice.
  • Doxycycline also used in some areas for the cure of chloroquin resistant falciparum malaria.

Drug interaction of Doxycycline

  • Doxycycline and iron can bind together in gastrointestinal tract and reduces the absorption of doxycycline.
  • Orally use of doxycycline produced esophageal irritation.
  • Oral use of doxycycline leads to hepatotoxicity.
  • Doxycycline interacts with drugs such as aspirin, atorvastatin, esomeprazole, cyanocobalamin, ascorbic acid, acetaminophen, montelukast, alprazolam, cetirizine, furosemide, zolpiderm.

Dose of Doxycycline

  • In a bacterial infection initially orally 200 mg divided in 2 or 4 doses given first day ,after that a maintenance dose of 100 mg per day given once or in two doses. In a more severe infection 100 mg every 12 hours given orally.
  • For acne 100 mg orally given two times in a day for 3 to 6 weeks or until improvement occurs.
  • For anthrax prophylaxis 100 mg orally given after every 12 hours for 60 days.
  • For chlamydia infection 100 mg orally two times in a day for 7 days or 200 mg once a day for 7 days.

Overdose of Doxycycline

An overdose symptom of doxycycline depends on the quantity of overdose administered. Some common symptoms are as follow-

  • Anorexia
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Dysphagia
  • Inflammatory lesions in anogenital region
  • Skin reaction and rashes
  • Photosensitive and hypersensitive reaction like urticaria, anaphylaxis.

In case of overdosing you should take prevention or immediately contact to physician.

Missed dose

When a single dose of doxycycline missed by a patient, take it when reminds or if there is no sufficient dose interval between missed and next dose then left out missed dose and keep the doses continue manner . Do not take the two doses at a same time.
