Bactroban is a semi solid dosage from contains antibiotics Mupirocin as an active ingredient which is used to treat skin infections impetigo (in which blister or soreness formed on the neck). It is mostly used in the treatment of streptococci infection which is mainly responsible for causing skin infection.

Bactroban consist of Mupirocin, which inhibit the synthesis of isoleucyl t RNA by inhibiting the enzyme isoleucyl t RNA synthetase, responsible for binding of isoleucine and t RNA for synthesis of isoleucyl t RNA. Prevention of this will results in killing of bacteria and stopping the growth of bacteria by inhibiting the bacterial protein synthesis.

Medicinal uses of Bactroban

  • It is used to cure the streptococci infection.
  • Used to treat the infection caused by staphylococcus aureus.
  • In case of beta hemolytic streptococci Bactroban used.
  • It is also used in case of streptococcus pyrogens.
  • Bactroban used to heal infection of skin such as impetigo.

How to use Bactroban

  • Wash your hand before applying the Bactroban.
  • The affected area should be clean and dry.
  • Apply the prescribed Bactroban on the affected area and until the infection gets healed or you feel better.
  • Notice the affected area 3-5 days if improvement occurs continue the treatment until infection gets whole healed.  And if there is no improvement then contact to your doctor.


Bactroban is contraindicated in patients with kidney problems and patients with hypersensitivity reactions to Bactroban.

Storage of Bactroban

  • It should be kept in air tight and light resistant container at a temperature not more than 25c. Do not keep it in a freeze.
  • It should also be kept away from direct sunlight and water resources. It should be keep away from children and pets.

Symptoms of overdosing of Bactroban

  • Generally the overdosing of Bactroban is rare. Though there are some common symptoms like as hypersensitivity, itching, pain may occur at the site of application.
  • If Bactroban gets into eyes and mouth then rinse well with water.

Missed dose of Bactroban

If any dose of this drug is missing then apply it as soon as you remember, if it is time for next dose then skip the missed dose and use it on your initial regular schedule. Do not apply two doses at a same time.

Side effects of Bactroban

  • Burning, stinging.
  • Pain on the application site.
  • Cracked, dry, scaly skin.
  • Swelling, warmth of the skin, tenderness.
  • Sores, white spot, ulcers.
  • Irritation, itching, reddening of skin.
  • Nausea, headaches are less common.

Precautions while using Bactroban

  • It should be used topically only.
  • You should not use Bactroban if you have any allergic reactions to Mupirocin.
  • Do not use Bactroban on a very large open wound.
  • It should not be used in case of breast feeding.
  •  Avoid Bactroban nearby eyes, nose and mouth.
