Bactrim is a combination of antibiotics, sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim. It kills the sensitive bacteria and heals the infections, and prevents many infections. Bactrim acts by inhibiting the folic acid synthesis in bacteria.

Bactrim acts by inhibiting the folic acid synthesis of bacteria. It is combination of two antibiotics so the different antibiotic acts at different stages of folic acid synthesis. The sulfamethoxazole stops the synthesis of dihydrofolic acid whereas trimethoprim stops the formation of tetrahydrofolic acid. Thus both inhibit the synthesis of folic acid. Thus kills the bacteria and stop the growth of bacteria.

Medicinal use of Bactrim

  • Bactrim is used to treat much different type of infections which are caused by bacteria.
  • Bactrim used in case of urinary tract infection, traveler’s diarrhea, shigellosis.
  • In case of ear infection and pneumocystis jiroveci pneumonia Bactrim can be used.
  • In bronchitis Bactrim also used.
  • Bactrim also used as the prophylaxis for bacterial infection.

Drug interactions

  • It interacts with metformin if given together and interferes with blood glucose level.
  • Avoid the drugs such as omeprazole, furosemide, aspirin, tramadol, prednisone, alprazolam, lisinopril.

Storage conditions for Bactrim

  • Proper storage of Bactrim always improves the shelf life of Bactrim. The storage temperature for Bactrim should be room temperature, between 25c to30c.
  • Always keep Bactrim away from direct sunlight, heat, moisture, in air tight and light resistant container.
  • It should keep out of reach of children and pets.

Doses of Bactrim   

  • For urinary tract infection two Bactrim tablet after every 12 hours will be given for 10 to 14 days.
  • For shigellosis two Bactrim tablet given after every 12 hours for 5 days.
  • For chronic bronchitis two Bactrim tablet given after every 12 hours for 14 days.
  • In case of pneumocystis jiroveci pneumonia the usual dose is 75 to 100 mg/kg sulfamethoxazole and 15 to 20 mg/kg trimethoprim per 24 hour, given in equally divided doses after every 6 hours for 14 to 21 days.
  • For treatment of traveler’s diarrhea two Bactrim tablet given every 12 hours for 5 days.

Missed dose of Bactrim

  • In case of a missed dose take missed dose immediately when remind, and if it is time for next dose then skip the missed dose and continue the dose schedule.
  • Do not take two doses of Bactrim at same time.

Symptoms when overdose of Bactrim taken

Symptoms of overdose of Bactrim differ person to person depending upon the quantity of dosage taken. Some common overdose effects are –

  • Dizziness
  • Fever
  • Abdominal pain
  • Anorexia
  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Vomiting

In case of overdose patient requires pumping of stomach or a well-deserved treatment.  So immediately contact a physician.

Side effect of Bactrim

  • Abdominal and stomach pain.
  • Black and tarry stools.
  • Cough, hoarseness, chillness, chest pain.
  • Headache, fever, dizziness.
  • Loosening of skin and changes of skin color.
  • Nausea, loss of appetite.
  • Discouragement, nervousness.

Precautions while taking Bactrim

  • If you are allergic to sulfamethoxazole or trimethoprim then you should not take Bactrim.
  • In case of pregnancy avoid Bactrim. It can harm the unborn baby.
  • In case of breastfeeding do not take Bactrim as it can pass in milk and harm the baby.
  • Bactrim should not be given to a child younger than two months.
  • While taking Bactrim avoid the consumption of alcohol.
