Avelox Hydrochloride is an antibiotic drug of fluroquinolone group. Moxifloxacin fights against bacteria present in the body. It treats bacterial infection of skin, sinus, lungs and stomach.  Its antibacterial spectrum includes gram positive bacteria (E coli, protease species, influenza, chlamydia, streptococcus pneumonia). Avelox is a broad spectrum antibiotic which is active against gram positive and gram negative bacteria. It is taken orally.

Moxifloxacin the brand of Avelox inhibits DNA graze due to which separation of bacterial DNA takes place and thus results in inhibiting replication of cell.


  • Drink lots of water while taking avelox.
  • Avelox can be taken with or without food.
  • Symptom may improve early before the infection is cured, so skipping of dose may increase the risk of infection which is resistant to microorganism.


  • Avelox should not be given to children because of risk of injury to musculoskeletal system.
  • Non- steroidal anti- inflammatory drugs taken with avelox may increase the risk of CNS stimulation and convulsion.
  • Ziprasidone is contraindicated with avelox because it may increase QT disorder interval.

  • FOR BRONCHITIS- 400 mg of avelox is given orally for 5 days.
  • FOR INTRA-ABDOMINAL INFECTION-400 mg orally for 5 to 14 days.
  • FOR PNEUMONIA-400mg orally for 7 to 14 days.
  • FOR SINUSITIS-400mg orally for 10 days.
  • FOR SKIN INFECTION-400mg orally for 7 to 21 days.
  • FOR BASILLUS ANTHRACIS- 400mg orally for 60 days.
  • FOR ANTHRAX PROPHYLAXIS- 400mg orally, once in a day for 60 days.
  • FOR TUBERCULOSIS-400mg orally in combination with 3 active drugs for 18 to 24 months for treatment of multidrug resistant tuberculosis.



  • Hypersensitivity and photosensitivity
  • Stomach ache and stomach cramps

If you suffer from any of these symptoms then following steps should be taken

  • In case of overdose stomach should be emptied and adequate hydration should be maintained.
  • Patient should be observed carefully and should be given supportive or required treatment.
  • Administration of activated charcoal should be done so as to prevent excessive increase of fluroquinolone concentration in the body.


  • If any dose of avelox is missed then take it whenever you remember, but make sure not to take missed dose at the time near to next dose.
  • Don’t take missed dose and next dose at the same time to make up for missed dose.


Adverse drug reaction is a broad term referring to unwanted or dangerous effect that may take place due to consumption of single dose of any drug or due to prolonged administration of any drug or due to consumption of multiple drugs.

  • Avelox consumption may cause swelling and tearing of tendons (fibers connecting bones to muscles).
  • Dizziness, fainting and fast heartbeat.
  • Diarrhea with water or blood.
  • Hallucination, Depression and Insomnia (lack of sleep).
  • Headache and nausea.
  • Person feels agitated and anxious.


  • Don’t consume antacid along with antibiotic.
  • Proteins and vitamin supplement should not be consumed along with antibiotic.
  • Antibiotic should not be given to small children as it causes discoloration of teeth.
