Betaxolol HCL is an ophthalmic preparation, which is meant for treating the ocular hypertension and open-angle glaucoma. This drug comes under the beta-blocker class of drug and helps to decrease the fluid production and pressure inside the eye. This drug used alone or may be used with other drugs. Open angle glaucoma is the problem in which the eye pressure is increased due to the high intraocular fluid.

Generic Betaxolol is a type of beta-adrenergic blocker, which is used to treat the glaucoma. Betaxolol reduces the pressure within the anterior chamber of the eye. It helps the production of cAMP within the cells of the eyes which lead to vasoconstriction. Due to the constriction in vessels the production of eye fluid decreased, which lead to resolve the open angle glaucoma.


  • Do not use this drug if you are allergic to the generic Betaxolol.
  • If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding then should not use this drug.
  • Do not use this drug if you are taking other beta blockers like Metoprolol.
  • Patient who has the heart problems like heart failure, irregular heartbeat etc., then avoid the use this drug.
  • If you had the eye surgery in last 3 month, then avoid the use this drug.

Drug interactions:

  • Beta blockers: Increases effects of these drugs
  • Calcium channel blockers: Increases risk of hypotension
  • Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, epinephrine, pilocarpine: Ophthalmic Betaxolol enhances the lowering of intraocular pressure (IOP) with these drugs
  • Catecholamine-depleting drugs, reserpine: Ophthalmic Betaxolol enhances Hypotensive and bradycardiac effect of these drugs
  • General anesthetics: May increase Hypotensive effects. Observe patient carefully for excessive hypotension,

Storage condition: Store this drug at room temperature below the 300C. Keep it away from the reach of children and pet. Keep it away from the direct sunlight, heat and moisture.

Applying procedure of Betaxolol HCL

  • Wash hands properly before using this drug.
  • Make a slop of your head and pull the lower eyelid.
  • Make a pouch for putting the eye drop into the eye.
  • Pour the one drop of drug in the eye and gently close your eyes.
  • Do not blink immediately, wait for some seconds and then close the eyes.

Missed dose: If you miss the dose then apply it as you remember it. Do not repeat the drug for make up the missed dose as it can cause side effects.

Overdose: In case of overdose contact with the health care professional.

Side effects: It produces some side effects like dizziness, fatigue, transient ocular irritation, blurred vision and lacrimation may occur occasionally.

Precaution should be taken while using Betaxolol HCL

  • Do not drive the vehicle after using this drug because causes blurred vision.
  • If you are beta blockers then contact with physician before using this drug.
  • Do not touch the dropper as it may infect it and cause infection in the eye.
