Optivar Eye Drops contains Generic Azelastine is used to treat and also provide relieve from itching of eyes that is caused due to allergy. It is an anti-allergic eye drop used for treating itching caused in the eyes due to allergies.

Generic Optivar, an antihistamine and mast cell stabilizer consist of Azilastine as a main ingredient. It is an anti-allergic eye drop used for treating itching caused in the eyes due to allergies. It is an antihistamine eye drop and it functions by blocking the release of histamine due to which the allergy in the eyes gets reduced. One drop should be instilled in each eye two times a day.

It functions by competing with histamine for the H1-receptor sites present on the effecter cells. It acts as an antagonist, so blocks the release of histamine and other mediators which are responsible for allergic reactions.

Optivar is contraindicated in following conditions such as-

  • Pregnant women should not use this eye drop.
  • Breast feeding mothers should avoid the use of this eye drop.
  • It is contraindicated for pediatric patients.
  • If an individual is allergic to Optivar then he / she should not use this eye drop.
  • A person suffering from thinning of blood should not use this eye drop as it shows anticoagulant effect.
  • Person suffering from asthma and heart related problems should not use this eye drop.

Various drugs that should not be consumed with Optivar are-

  • Antiepileptic drugs- Phenytoin, Carbamazepine
  • CNS stimulants- Nicotine
  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs- Salicylic acid, Paracetamol

Storage condition of Optivar

  • This eye drop should be stored at room temperature in cool and dry place.
  • It should be kept away from the reach of children and pets.
  • It should be stored away from direct heat, sunlight and moisture.

A person should instill one drop in each eye two times a day. Before using this eye drop firstly, wash your hands properly, and then tilt your head back. Then using your index finger, pull the lower eyelid away from the eye to form a pouch and drop the medicine into the pouch and gently close your eyes. Clean excess of medicine by using tissue paper.

If a dose of this Optivar is missed then, use it as soon as you remember. If it is the time for the next dose, then skip the missed dose and follow the normal routine regularly.

In case if overdose of this eye drop is taken, then some of the overdose symptoms may occur such as-

  • Bitter taste in mouth
  • Redness of eyes
  • Itching in the eyes

If any of these symptoms occur, then consult your nearby doctor.

Optivar eye drop may show various side effects such as- Severe allergic reactions like rashes, itching, redness on skin, difficulty breathing, swelling of the mouth and lips. It also leads to headache, blurred vision and burning sensation in eyes.

Various safety tips that should be followed while using this eye drop are-

  • Don't use optivar eye drop for treating redness of the eyes caused due to contact lenses.
  • In case of pediatric patient this; eye drop should be used with caution after consulting a doctor.
  • Instilling this eye drop in eyes may lead to blurred vision, so avoid driving after using this eye drop.
  • To prevent contamination of this eye drop do not touch the tip of the dropper with your hands
