Augmentin is a tablet dosage form and it is highly effective antibiotic drug as it contains the combination of two antibiotics that are amoxicillin and clavulanic acid. Both the drugs come under the category of beta-lactam antibiotics. It is a broad spectrum antibiotic used to treat wide variety of bacterial infections.

In Augmentin both the drugs amoxicillin and clavulanic acid act by different mechanisms. Amoxicillin kill the bacteria and limit its growth by stopping cell wall synthesis of bacteria by binding to penicillin-binding protein. Clavulanic acid is a beta lactamase inhibitor. It acts effectively on the penicillin resistant bacteria by blocking the beta lactamase enzyme in those resistant bacteria.


Augmentin can be used to treat various bacterial infections that include:

  • Urinary tract infections
  • Sinusitis
  • Bacterial infection of ear
  • Skin infection
  • Airways infection.

Augmentin is contraindicated in these patients

  • Who show hypersensitivity reaction towards the drug
  • Feeding mothers as it can excrete into breast milk and thereby it may show harmful effects on infants.
  • With severe diarrhea

Drug interaction

  • Co-administration of Augmentin with probenecid may result in increased toxicity of Augmentin
  • Administration of Augmentin along with anti-coagulant as it may upsurge the bleeding
  • Concomitant administration of Augmentin and allopurinol as it may lead to skin rashes.
  • Consult your doctor in case if you are taking contraceptive pills as Augmentin may lower the efficacy of contraception.

What is the preferred dose of Augmentin?

Preferred dose of Augmentin for adults:

Lower respiratory tract infection

  • Acute infection- 250/125 mg orally twice a day for 10 days.
  • Severe infection- 500/125 mg orally twice a day for 7-10 days.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

  • 500 mg by oral route thrice a day

Bacterial sinusitis

  • 2000 mg (2-sustained release tablets) twice a day for 10 days.


  • 500 mg thrice a day for 7-10 days


  • 500 mg orally thrice a day

Skin abscess

  • 875 mg twice a day

Diabetic foot

  • 2000mg (2 sustained release tablet) twice a day for 7-14 days

Preferred dose for pediatrics:

For mild infections

  • 20 mg/kg/day by oral route

For severe infections

  • 40 mg/kg/day by oral route

Dose of the drug should be carefully adjusted in case of renal or liver dysfunction.

What to do in case if your dose is missed?

If you missed your dose take that dose as soon as you remember, but in case if it is time for next dose skip that dose. Do not double your doses in any case as it may result in drug related side effects.

Symptoms in case of overdose

Overdose can show these effects in your body:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Dizziness
  • Sickness
  • Reddening of skin.
  • Hyperactivity

Unwanted effects of Augmentin

Commonly observed adverse effects of using Augmentin are:

  • indigestion,
  • nauseatic feeling

Less common side effects are:

  • Skin irritation
  • Loose stool
  • Yellowing of teeth

Rare side effects are:

  • Hypersensitivity reactions
  • Liver dysfunction
  • Jaundice
  • Blood disorder

Side effects of drug vary from patient to patient and also depend on the dosing regimen.


  • Discontinue the medication if allergic reactions persist.
  • If you have liver or kidney disorder, discuss your medical history with your doctor.
  • Avoid using this drug in case of pregnancy and for feeding mothers.
  • Do not discontinue your medication in between, even if the symptoms subside, as it may expose you to the antibiotic resistance.
