Alphagan P contains Brimonidine tartrate as an active ingredient which causes lowering the intraocular pressure in the eye. It is used to treat the open angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension disease associated with the eye. Higher the pressure in the eye, higher will be chance of risk of vision loss, nerve damage, or blindness. Alphagan P allows the fluid drainage within the eye by decreasing pressure found inside the eye. The term open-angle glaucoma explained as increased intraocular pressure, which results in pathological changes in the optic disk and cause blindness.


Brimonidine tartrate is the active pharmaceutical compound of Alphagan P eye drop. Brimonidine is an alpha 2 agonist which helps to activate the G protein-coupled receptors and inhibits the action of adenylate cyclase and leads to reduction in cAMP. Reduction in cAMP is responsible for the production aqueous humor in the eyes. Use of alpha 2 agonists like Brimonidine tartrate causes the vasoconstriction of blood vessels and helps to acute reduction in aqueous humor flow and gives relief in open angle glaucoma.


Contraindication

  • The drug should not be prescribed to the children under the age of the 2 years as they are more prone to the side effects of the drug.
  • The person who is allergic to the generic Brimonidine should not use this drug.
  • If you have the problems related to heart like congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease, history of stroke or blood clot then do not use this drug.
  • Patient who has the unbalanced blood pressure should not use this drug.
  • Who are suffering from the mental disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, depression, anxiety extra should not use it.
  • Any individual who has the history of eye infections should not use it.

Drug interactions: Some drugs are interacted with Brimonidine and alter its mechanism of action like Diphenhydramine used in drowsiness, Diazepam used in anxiety, Carbamazepine for seizures, Cyclobenzaprine which is used as muscle relaxants so do not take them along with the use of this drug.


Storage condition: It should be stored at room temperature below the 300C. the drug should be kept away from the children and pets.

How to use Alphagan P:

  • Before applying the drug wash your hand properly. To avoid the infection do not touch the tip of the dropper.
  • If anyone uses the contact lenses, then remove them carefully and apply the drug. After 15 minutes of applying the drug you can wear lenses.
  • Before you use this open the cap of the bottle and then tilt your head. Make a pouch in the lower eyelid and put the drug in it.
  • After putting the drug look downward and gently close your eyes.
  • Use one drop of drug in a day for three times until better effects is not come.
  • Do not rub the eyes after applying the drug as it may produce itching and swelling. 

Side effects: It produces some side effects like dry mouth, dizziness, vision, bad taste in the mouth, drowsiness, tiredness, headache, eye pain, burning and swelling etc.

Precaution should be taken while using this drug

  • Limit your alcoholic beverages while using this drug.
  • Pregnant and lactating mother should not use this drug.
  • Do not use it if you had the eye surgery in the past three months.
